River Heights Charter School was founded in 2004, and currently serves 75 students, on average.
THE SAME BUT DIFFERENT
We are a tuition free public high school. Our graduation requirements, like those of any public high school, are dictated by the state. In many ways, the similarities end there. We offer a unique learning environment that builds motivation and fully engages students in the learning process.
While River Heights students are required to meet state requirements, how we differ is in our learning methodology. We take this approach:
- Project-Based Learning. Projects are student generated, and designed to create a dynamic learning experience through real-life application and community involvement.
- Learning Targets. Learning Targets are a combination of state requirements and our own standards, which focus on life skills and lifelong learning. In completing the Learning Targets, our students also meet the state requirements.
- Blooms Taxonomy. Mastery of each Learning Target is determined by using the Blooms Taxonomy model of assessment. Each student is expected to complete all required benchmarks by demonstrating a secure knowledge of that target.
- Advisories. Each student belongs to an advisory of 15 to 20 students. Advisories are an alternative to the traditional classroom, and involve a mix of students from 9th to 12th grade.
- Post Secondary. Students are required to participate in at least one post secondary education option (PSEO) opportunity, or an equivalent designed by the student and approved by their advisory team. Examples include a student exchange program, a significant internship, or other substantial learning experience.
- Senior Projects. All seniors are required to develop a substantial senior project. These projects are targeted to make a real world impact, through research conducted and submitted to the appropriate institutions, development of a product or starting and operating a real business, or working in a leadership postion in a significant service project.
